Free art supplies for journalers

You do not need all the colours in the box! You can create just as well with three paint tubes and some scrap paper as you can with a box of 24 and a sketchbook - true story! Remember, this is a journey and you can gather and grow your supplies along the way.

This process can be as complicated or as simple as you make it, if you want to keep things simple, start with these essential supplies:. This is the most essential item for creative journaling!

As with all supplies there are many options to choose from, again I suggest keeping it simple and not overthinking your choice for a journal. If you have something sitting around your house already, then start there and use that.

Art journals come in many forms, you could use, a sketchbook, a notebook, re-purpose an actual book, or DIY it make a journal from a collection of papers junk journal style.

Start with what you have and figure out what you like along the way. I recommend using acrylic paints to start with - simply because they are easy to use, cost effective, versatile and brilliant for creating backgrounds on your journal pages.

You can apply acrylic paint in so many ways, brush, roller, fingers, print it. you can achieve some really amazing results with just a few tubes of acrylic paint. The best part is that you will find them in all craft and office supplies stores.

You could also add a few tubes of watercolour to your kit, if you want to achieve a softer look and add more layers to your creations. Keep in mind that thinner paper will not take watercolour well.

You can find basic brushes in most craft stores or even in supermarkets. This is all you need to get started. I recommend buying a pack that has a few different sizes to experiment with.

Again, over time you will build up your own range of brushes and learn what you enjoy using. These are for the writing part of art journaling, I recommend a pen that you feel comfortable writing with, some hard pencils, and even coloured pencils are great to use for writing.

I love using brush pens that you can find at most craft stores , I buy cheap ones so that I am not afraid to ruin them when I write over wet paint! You could try a fine liner or gel pens or even a Sharpie. I look for an email address and craft a basic email that includes a few key things:.

You have nothing to lose by approaching a company with an opportunity that can benefit both of you. Just focus on what you can offer them and be prepared for rejection. When you create art and post it online, start tagging the companies that made the supplies you used. This is an indirect way to open the door to get free supplies, but occasionally these companies take notice and may offer up more supplies as a thank you for your dedication.

Your success is their success. If you want to leave everything up to chance, you can just focus on your art and growing your following. As you build a bigger presence online, companies may reach out to you completely organically to offer you free things to promote on your account.

This has happened to me multiple times without tagging or mentioning any company. If a company approaches you with free products, do not let them dictate the terms of how and if you present the products on your social accounts without considering requesting additional payment for your time and work.

Free supplies can only buy so much from an influencer. If you want control over any part of the post, then you must pay for a sponsored post.

Free products are just another way to advertise. I took a look at the insights from one of my posts in July I had around 53, followers at the time. You can see the post reached 11, accounts. If you scroll to the bottom of the insights, you can see an option to promote the post.

I want you to go through the promotion screens until you get to the one that looks like the right picture. That will give you an idea of how much a company would have to spend on one post in order to get the reach your average posts get already.

Then just back out of the promotion. Not to mention, the retail value of a product is marked up from the actual cost of making the product…. If you approach a company first, be mindful of the value of the products you request when compared to the value you can give the company. By looking at the cost of advertising vs.

Just dip the cap in acrylic paint and then stamp it onto the paper. But, the messier, the better. You might have an old shoebox or a notebook cover you no longer need. You can use it to apply paint. Make straight thin lines with it by dabbing the paint onto the paper.

Or use it as a craft spatula and apply paint. It looks worn out. Definitely one of my favorites. Well, pop just a few to indulge your inner child, and paint the rest with acrylics. Oooh, what the hell, pop them! Can you imagine using baby oil in your journals? When I was a kid, I liked drawing a lot.

Tracing images was a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon. Let it dry and later use it as transparency. I love this effect! In the photo below, the right piece of paper is already dry and ready to use.

I tried stamping on it with archival ink and it works!. Do you have any ideas for using this? Neat, right? And, yes, a few bucks saved in your wallet. If you stumble upon something else you think might have a great artistic effect, go for it. After that, experiment some more. And let me know how it went in the comments, or share this post on Pinterest!

In the picture above, I have Kuretake Watercolors , Finetec Mica Watercolors , various watercolor tubes, and Sakura Koi Watercolors this is the color set, but it also comes in a a few other sizes.

Watercolors are a water soluble paint that are pigment based, and can be activated with you guessed it! They are transparent and remain water soluble when dried, so they can be manipulated in lots of ways. They are a popular medium in art journaling because of how easy they can be to use, and you can create some great effects with little effort.

A popular use is to coat a page with gesso first, and then use watercolors on top. This creates more of a water stain effect you can see it below in some of my pages rather than a soft watercolor look. Paper absorbency is important when using watercolors since you want paper that does not immediately absorb the paints.

This is one of my tiny art journals, and I used watercolors to create this page. The paper is coated in gesso first the journal was made from a paper grocery bag , and as you can see the paint leaves a water stain effect and hard edges.

Modeling paste is my other great love affair when it comes to art journaling supplies. Once you understand how to use it, it can be the most wonderful arsenal in your art journaling toolkit.

Modeling paste is a medium used typically with acrylic paints. It is applied directly to the surface you are work on and has the consistency of soft drywall putty. It applies wet but dries to a hard finish.

Its opacity is the same dry as it is wet. It can be used as a sculpting medium, more or less, in that it is used to create texture and shape under your paint layers.

You can also tint it with other paint colors, and it can be found in black as well. One of my favourite uses is to spread modeling paste through a stencil.

It adds wonderful depth and texture to the page and allows those stenciled elements to really pop. This is the wonderful effect of spreading modeling paste through a stencil! And on top of a contrasting background, it really makes these triangles pop off the page.

On this page, I spread some modeling paste first and then drew in it with my paint brush to create marks.
